🚦 Proposed Roundabout Coming to Lacey
College Street in Lacey Gets a Facelift

A Long-Discussed Traffic Fix Near Saint Martin’s University Just Got a Big Boost

After years of discussion and planning, a major traffic change in Lacey Midtown is officially gaining momentum. During a recent city council work session, leaders gave the green light to move forward with a proposed roundabout at the intersection of College Street and Seventh Avenue.
This project aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and pedestrian access in a rapidly developing area—home to Saint Martin’s University, Huntamer Park, and several new businesses and residential developments.
Who’s Involved in the Roundabout Project?
The project took a big step forward with the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between three key partners:
🏛️ City of Lacey – Leading the project’s planning and infrastructure management
⛪ Saint Martin’s Abbey – Major landholder and longtime community partner
🏢 MJR Development – A Kirkland-based company that has been actively redeveloping properties around Huntamer Park and Lacey Midtown
By partnering, these groups are pooling resources, land agreements, and expertise to make the roundabout a reality sooner rather than later.
Why a Roundabout—and Why Now?
The intersection at College and Seventh has long been flagged as a traffic trouble spot, especially during peak hours, community events, and university sessions.
Here’s why the city is prioritizing the roundabout:
✔ Improves Traffic Flow – Roundabouts typically reduce congestion compared to traditional intersections with lights or stop signs
✔ Boosts Safety – Studies show roundabouts significantly lower the risk of serious crashes
✔ Supports Midtown Redevelopment – As new housing, offices, and retail come to Lacey Midtown, better transportation systems are needed
✔ Enhances Walkability – Safer crossings and better traffic patterns support pedestrian-friendly design
What’s Next?
📋 Final Design Work – City planners and engineers will now move into the detailed design phase
🚦 Public Outreach – Expect updates and opportunities to weigh in on the final look and features
🏗️ Construction Timeline – No start date yet, but with the MOU signed, momentum is building for groundbreaking within the next 1–2 years
We’ll keep an eye out for public hearing dates and design previews!
